Central Asia Days conference (Information and advocacy, 2014-)
CAG has been organizing the conference Central Asia Days on a yearly basis since 2014. The conference is one of the advocacy tools that we use in order to reach out to duty-bearers in Sweden. It is also open to the general public, organizations, students and researchers. The conference usually lasts for two full days and consists of seminars, lectures, movie screenings or panel discussions. In connection to the conference, we have organized hearings and invited speakers to participate in other events in Sweden.
Exhibition (Information and advocacy, 2016-)
The exhibition Activism, Civil Society and Rights Based Work in Central Asia was created in 2016. It featured civil society organizations from Central Asia and presented themes including women’s rights, youth, the LGBTQ+ community, freedom of expression, art, migration, and environment. The aim was to shed light on Central Asian actors, how they organize themselves, and what methods they use to achieve change. The exhibition was updated and expanded annually and toured Sweden’s cities until 2021.
In 2022, we created a new exhibition Struggles and Dreams of Central Asia. It consists of 10 series of photographs and art works created by artists, activists, civil society actors, and journalists. The exhibition aims to shed light on organizations, activists, and artists aiming to bring much-needed changes to Central Asia. Struggles and Dreams of Central Asia started touring Swedish cities during the fall of 2022 and will continue doing so throughout the upcoming years. You read more about the exhibition in our publication.
Explainer clips on Central Asia (Information and advocacy, 2017-)
Within the information project, Central Asia Solidarity Groups creates various clips which provide insights, analysis and an opportunity to delve into different topics and developments in Central Asia. You can find our explainer clips via the following link.
Mobile game on human rights issues in Central Asia (Information and advocacy, 2019-)
Since 2019, CAG has been organizing interactive events to inform the participants about human rights issues in Central Asia through a digital game.
In 2022, the game was expanded and turned into a mobile game named Voices of Central Asia. It contains storylines that shed light on issues related to democratization, human rights, gender equality, youth, freedom of speech, migration, environment and security in Central Asia. As players navigate through the game’s stories, they take on the role of different characters and make choices that shape the outcome of the story, encouraging the participants to learn in an engaging way.
The game is available in English and Swedish, and can be downloaded on both Google Play and the App Store.
Lectures (Information and advocacy, 2014-)
CAG organizes lectures and seminars on a rolling basis throughout Sweden for students, journalists, duty-bearers, local civil society organizations, and the general public. Lectures are organized in close partnership with scholars, researchers and activists from Central Asia. Topics of the lectures vary depending on the most recent development in the region, and they typically align with our four thematic areas: women’s rights and gender equality, democratic youth organizing, climate and environment, and security and resilience.
Thematic days (Information and advocacy, 2015-)
Central Asia Solidarity Groups participates in various large-scale events in different parts of Sweden, such as Human Rights Days, Feminist Festivals, or Civil Society Forum. This provides us with an opportunity to raise awareness about Central Asia among the wider audience. Thematic days also include movie screenings and other events that we organize in collaboration with local partners.
Residencies and exchanges (2014-)
CAG has been organizing long-term residencies and short-term exchanges that target young people, activists and youth leaders from Central Asia, Sweden, Russia, and Poland. The thematic focus areas of the exchanges are broad concepts such as anti-discrimination, democracy, human rights, democratic forms of leadership and youth organizing, gender equality, security and resilience, climate and environment, and more. The goal is to provide tools, skills, platforms, and networks for youth leaders working with these themes. The exchanges also enhance the partnership between CAG and local organizations in Central Asia, leading to the development of new projects, initiatives, and collaborations.
Long-term volunteering (2014-)
Since 2014, Central Asia Solidarity Groups has been hosting long-term volunteers from Central Asia and Russia within the European Solidarity Corps project (previously “European Voluntary Service”). Volunteers are involved in CAG’s regular information, advocacy and solidarity activities and are engaged in local communities. This, in turn, promotes the virtue and importance of solidarity work among the participants. The project also aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of Central Asia, promote human rights, democratic citizenship, and cultural diversity among the volunteers, individual participants, and CSOs.
